La decouverte des lamelles epigraphiques de Dodone et la toute recente edition de 4216 de ces  inscriptions ont marque un tournant dans la recherche mantique puisqu'elles dementent sans appel le portrait quasi-mythique de la divination inspiree telle qu’elle aurait ete pratiquee a Delphes, un portrait idealise qui etait base sur les seules sources litteraires.  Tout comme la dualite entre les sources litteraires et epigraphiques qui marquent la comparaison entre les consultations oraculaires de Delphes et de Dodone, les deux portraits offerts par les  sortes Vergilianae  (selon la litterature) et par les  sortes Homericae  (selon les papyri) s'opposent fondamentalement.  Les  sortes Vergilianae  dans la litterature presentent des points communs avec les seances oraculaires delphiques et en partagent plusieurs  topoi .  Si les lamelles oraculaires de Dodone n'avaient pas ete retrouvees, c'est cette seule perspective qui aurait valeur aujourd'hui.  Pourtant, beaucoup d'efforts sont encore requis pour eradiquer celle-ci des etudes modernes, tant elle s'y est incrustee.
