Esta investigacion se propuso realizar una revision de la literatura existente sobre empresas familiares para poder detectar las tendencias en las investigaciones reportadas al respecto. Para ello se realizo una revision en Scopus para la aparicion del termino “family business” en el titulo de los documentos y se obtuvieron un total de 1163 referencias. El analisis permitio  concluir que el mayor por ciento de las investigaciones realzadas se concentro en las disciplina de Negocios, Gestion y Contabilidad y que el pais que mas ha publicado es USA, seguido de Canada, Italia y Espana y que solo dos paises de habla hispana (Espana y Chile) han publicado en el tema. Se determinaron los articulos seminales fundamentales en el tema. El analisis de las publicaciones en idioma espanol permitio determinar cinco enfoques fundamentales en este campo: analisis de los procesos de relevo generacional, evolucion de empresas familiares,  estrategias empresariales y resultados economicos, dinamica de las relaciones intrafamiliares y efectos sobre la empresa y como  las condiciones del entorno inciden en la permanencia y desarrollo de las empresas familiares.
