A representação é constituída de dois mecanismos: um visual e outro mental. Por isso, o sentido só se produz quando concerne a experiência do indivíduo. Esse panorama teórico se articula em três tempos, são eles: 1) a fotografia como espelho do real, 2) a fotografia como transformação do real e 3) a fotografia como traço de um real. Toma-se a semiótica de Peirce, para analisar e discutir a fotografia em preto e branco, enquanto símbolo, no contexto do que Vilém Flusser em Filosofia da Caixa Preta, chama “sociedade informática” e pós-industrial. Não se pode negar o efeito simbólico das imagens, no que tange a capacidade de produzir diversos tipos de interpretantes, conceituais ou abstratos. A imagem fotográfica em preto e branco, parece direcionar a mente de forma mais ágil, para a produção de interpretantes mais conceituais.
