Ce livre défie la recension.On souhaiterait moins en rendre la teneur que donner l'envie de le lire. 2De quoi s'agit-il ?Élu en 1570 à 22 ans prince-abbé de Fulda, Balthasar von Dernbach dirige sa principauté avec une habileté reconnue par tous.Pourtant, après qu'il a favorisé en 1572 la fondation d'un collège jésuite et mené la recatholicisation de ses terres, alors majoritairement protestantes, une partie du chapitre et de la noblesse le contraint en 1576 à l'abdication.Tandis que Fulda est confiée à un administrateur, Balthasar s'efforce de recouvrer son pouvoir et y parvient en 1602 à l'issue d'un long procès.Les interrogatoires de 1590-1592, en particulier, sont pour G.W. l'occasion de présenter la façon dont les acteurs de cette histoire en construisent la vérité et le sens.Lorsque l'abbé Balthasar meurt en 1606, la principauté est, selon l'expression consacrée, « recatholicisée ».
