Abstract
Les textes latins, surtout ceux de la fin de la République et du début de l’Empire, nous font découvrir un vaste répertoire d’images de froid et de chaleur, de repos et de travail, d’indifférence et d’amour. Car l’hiver du poète est imaginaire: il préfère s’imaginer se frayant un chemin dans la neige plutôt que de le faire dans la réalité, car l’imaginaire est le royaume du poète. L’hiver se caractérise par des qualités généralement perçues négativement: oisiveté, désœuvrement, luxe. Or ce sont là les conditions idéales pour s’adonner à la poésie. Ainsi la froideur insensible de la bien-aimée, chère a l’élégie, se retrouve-t-elle — de façon dissimulée — chez l’amant, plus intéressé à la poésie qu’à un corps vivant.
