Abstract
Si les portraits de femmes les représentent souvent un livre à la main, il en va autrement des portraits d’hommes et de poètes où cet attribut se fait rare. Cette observation nous porte à croire que la présence du livre souligne davantage les différents rôles sociaux des hommes et des femmes que le niveau d’éducation. Par une étude de l’iconographie et du contexte socioculturel, nous en arrivons à la conclusion que le livre symbolise un mode d’interaction qui s’inscrit en faux avec le caractère oral de la culture des Athéniens du v e siècle av. J.-C. En outre, le livre souligne l’absence d’une voix féminine dans le monde culturel de l’Athènes du v e s.
