Il y a plus d’une vingtaine d’années, une génération d’artistes flamands ont redéfini les formes et les esthétiques et même revu les limites du théâtre occidental. Ces artistes expérimentaux, identifiés sur la scène internationale comme les figures de proue de la « vague flamande », occupent aujourd’hui des positions clés dans les maisons de théâtre et les compagnies internationales. Cet article remet en question cette notion d’une « vague » dominante et préfère distinguer différentes vagues et vaguelettes successives dans l’hétérogène scène théâtrale de Flandre. Une première partie de l’article repose sur la réception critique du théâtre flamand des années 1980. Une deuxième étudie les pratiques de certains jeunes créateurs flamands contemporains qui, tout comme leurs prédécesseurs influents, sont à la recherche d’un langage théâtral qui leur est propre. Ancrés dans la réalité historique, sociale et politique, les projets de Elly Van Eeghem, de Thomas Bellinck et des frères Ben Chikha tentent de nouer des rapports explicites avec cette réalité en privilégiant le dialogue entre fiction et non-fiction. Ainsi, cet article présente deux générations de créateurs de théâtre en Flandre dont l’esthétique et le rapport au réel diffèrent fondamentalement.
