Abstract
Founded in the 19th c., the Canadian Indian residential school system was intended to force the assimilation of the First Nations into European-Canadian society. It involved punishing children for speaking their native languages or practicing their native faith, leading to allegation in the 20th с. of cultural genocide and ethnocide. Overcrowding schools, poor sanitation, and a lack of medical care led to high death rates. Aboriginal students and teachers at the residential schools were notoriously under-trained. The legacy of Indian Residential Schools has contributed to social problems that continue to exist in many communities today.
