Abstract
L’étude de deux personnages ayant vécu à Athènes au IV e s. av. J.-C. éclaire le rôle des esclaves publics au sein de la main-d’œuvre et de la vie de la cité. Le premier, Pittalacos, est connu grâce à Eschine qui nous décrit ses moments de loisirs (I, 53–69). L’épigraphie nous renseigne sur le second. Euclès, scribe professionnel et comptable ( IG II 2 , 120, 1440, 1673). Ces témoignages attestent leur grande compétence et renseignent sur les privilèges dont pouvaient jouir les esclaves publics qualifiés ( demosioi hyperetai ). Au-delà de l’image trop prosaïque de l’esclave public, anonyme et simple ouvrier, nous voyons ce personnage prendre une certaine profondeur.
