Abstract
Deux surveys, de surface et géophysique, ainsi que des fouilles, ont révélé beaucoup sur les fortifications de l’ancienne cite arcadienne de Stymphale. Construits dans la première moitie du IV c s. av. J.-C, en toute vraisemblance, les murs, portes et tours ressemblent de bien des façons à ceux de Mantinée toute proche. Différence notable cependant, la présence de grandes tours d’artillerie élevées au début du III c s. av. J.-C. au moment où les catapultes devenaient un élément important dans la stratégie d’attaque et de défense. L’article aborde tous les points importants de la défense de la cité et tente de les mettre en contexte.
