Este artículo se focaliza en un fenómeno relativamente frecuente en el cine hispanoamericano contemporáneo, sea clasificado como "de género" o como "de arte": la puesta en escena de un personaje cantando de modo desafinado una canción popular en el marco de una trama centrada en los vínculos familiares. Partiendo de la hipótesis de que esas escenas resultan clave tanto en la diégesis como en la configuración estética de las obras y en la comunicación afectiva con el público, el artículo se propone analizar las diferentes funciones diegéticas (y algunas extradiegéticas) de las canciones en vivo en una selección representativa de cuatro películas - dos argentinas y dos mexicanas -, y articular sus efectos con la tradición melodramática latinoamericana a la que remiten o invierten. El análisis muestra cómo, en las películas melodramáticas (La misma luna, de Patricia Riggen [2007], y El Polaquito, de Juan Carlos Desanzo [2003]), las canciones participan en la lógica estética y las contradicciones propias del género, mientras que en los antimelodramas (Post Tenebras Lux de Carlos Reygadas [2012] y Una semana solos de Celina Murga [2008]) el valor narrativo y afectivo de la canción compensa la latencia del conflicto dramático.
