Abstract
À cause de l’inclination naturelle des pierres volcaniques de Lesbos, on devait employer dans la construction dite « lesbienne » une règle de plomb flexible pour joindre les pierres polygonales et curvilignes. C’est cette technique de construction laborieuse et coûteuse, symbole de la puissance et de la richesse des cités de Lesbos, que les Mytiléniens ont choisie pour construire la grande enceinte projetée en 428. à l’époque où se réalisait sous leur égide le synoecisme de l’île. Les Athéniens ont détruit ces murs, mais en 333 la cité était encore entourée d’une enceinte. Il est donc possible qu’Aristote ait été témoin, pendant son séjour à Mytilène en 345/344, de la reconstruction de cette enceinte pour laquelle on employa des techniques « lesbiennes ».
