Abstract
Recent developments in Saudi Arabia have focussed attention on the topic of the tribe-state relationship, which is crucial in understanding the connections among politics, geography, religion, and the history of the region. This essay addresses the relationship among three major factors: the emergence of a united Arabia, the growth of Wahhabism, and the geographic features of the Arabian peninsula. The paper illustrates how the status of the tribes changed from that of primary social organizations and symbols of political authority in given regions to that of entities subsumed within an emerging state and losing in the process many of their defining features, particularly their exclusive claims on tribal territorial domains. Since this subject is extensive, the scope of the research is limited to examining certain tribes and movements that played central roles in Saudi state building and were marginalized later.
