Abstract
Le corps d’un esclave appartenait à son maître: cette propriété ne peut être mieux illustrée que par le droit dont jouissait le maître de punir son esclave comme il l’entendait. Une étude de Ménandre et des fragments de la Nouvelle Comédie montre que ces punitions pouvaient prendre la forme de coups de fouet, de taloches et d’actes de négligence comme la privation de nourriture. L’esclave prenait sa revanche en se moquant des valeurs de son maître dont il était devenu le confident. Lorsqu’au contraire, il compatissait avec son maître et faisait siennes ses valeurs, c’était dans l’espoir d’obtenir, sinon la liberté, du moins une certaine autonomie.
