Abstract
The article deals with the transformation of the idea of cooperative in English societies of 1850-1870s. This problem is not fully covered in the Russian historiographic field and requires further research. The article is considered within the modern social history that is a current historical trend. The purpose of the study is to examine the emergence, transformation and role of cooperatives in social and cultural practices of England in the I mid-second quarter of the XIX century. The reasons of emergence of the cooperatives, the impact of the Rochdale Pioneers' experience to create a network of cooperatives, the influence of the cooperative movement on thepolitical situation in the UK are considered. The author concludes that cooperation was the result of the social and cultural transformations happening in English society and solved economic problems of part of English workers.
