Abstract
Certaines études récentes sous-estiment l’importance thérapeutique du bain dans les eaux thermales en Afrique du Nord. Ainsi les sources littéraires, épigraphiques et archéologiques permettent-elles de localiser avec certitude 29 établissements thermaux. Si certains ne sont connus que par des références littéraires, d’autres se reconnaissent à des éléments architecturaux caractéristiques à la Tunisie: les pièces abritant le bassin principal ne sont pas fermées alors qu’une nette préférence allait aux pièces de bain circulaires. Malgré les problèmes de chronologie que posent ces spas, il est clair que le bain thermal était une coutume fort ancienne.
