Abstract
Étude des élèments constitutifs du genre biographique et de ses liens avec Aristoxenos et les œuvres des péripatéticiens intitulées Vies (ou Types de vie ?). Nous concluons que la biographie était, pendant l’Antiquité, une vaste souscatégorie de l’historiographie et qu’elle pouvait alors couvrir tout récit de vie — celle d’un personage, d’une cité. d’une nation, de leurs origines à leur fin. La manière d’écrire une biographie, les éléments qui y figuraient ne préoccupaient pas les Anciens, pas plus qu’ils ne se souciaient de sa ressemblance avec d’autres formes d’historiographie. En fait, tout récit de vie pouvait figurer parmi cette vaste sous-catégorie de l’historiographie appelée Bioi. Par conséquent, une æuvre que les Modernes ne compteraient pas parmi les véritables biographies aurait été perçue comme telle par les lecteurs de l’Antiquité.
