Ce texte porte sur deux dimensions spécifiques des relations interculturelles, soit : 1. les relations entre des ressortissants de la société d’accueil et des personnes issues de l’immigration, observées dans des situations de jumelage, de parrainage, de famille d’accueil ou d’adoption internationale; 2. la capacité de médiation chez des immigrants et des Québécois de toutes origines. Pour étudier ces deux dimensions, l’auteure a eu recours aux concepts d’intermédiaire culturel et de médiateur de cultures. Les rôles d’intermédiaire culturel et de médiateur de cultures sont tous deux nécessaires à la société et évoluent en même temps qu’elle. Toute société étant hiérarchisée, stratifiée, l’intermédiaire culturel contribue à en assurer le bon fonctionnement. Parce qu’il comprend mieux les représentations individuelles et collectives liées à sa culture d’origine, à son projet de vie et à ses attentes et motivations, qui marquent ses relations avec l’autre, et parce qu’il perçoit mieux les « écrans » et les « filtres » à travers lesquels s’acquiert la connaissance de l’autre, l’individu, que ce soit la personne de souche ou l’immigrant, est à même de devenir « médiateur de cultures ».
