La présente recherche porte sur l’approche du diagnostic de l’autisme réalisé en milieu africain où, dans la majorité des communautés, les personnes autistes non seulement ne reçoivent pas ce diagnostic, mais certains sont par ailleurs assimilés au diagnostic social de la sorcellerie. L’étude consiste à évaluer une population de personnes qui présentent une déficience intellectuelle, une surdité, une maladie mentale ou un diagnostic social de la sorcellerie. L’objectif consiste à d’identifier, parmi elles, celles qui répondent non seulement aux critères de diagnostic des Troubles Envahissants de Développement (TED), mais aussi celles qui sont autistes. L’échelle d’évaluation des troubles Envahissants de développement et des autres troubles apparentés (EATA) a servi au dépistage des participants présentant un TED. Le CARS et l’ADI-R ont permis d’identifier, parmi les participants présentant un TED, ceux qui sont autistes. Tous les participants autistes présentent également un diagnostic de déficience intellectuelle mesuré à l’aide du test de Bonhomme de Goodenough et de la Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-R). Les résultats confirment que l'autisme peut être identifié dans la population des enfants qui présentent des troubles de développement divers. Dans le contexte africain, les enfants autistes peuvent donc être identifiés parmi ceux qui sont considérés comme présentant de la sorcellerie.
