Abstract
Although social enterprise is increasingly acknowledged as a novel and effective approach to address social problems around the world, the question of how actors work to legitimize this organizational form remains unsolved in the social entrepreneurship literature. Based on a variety of secondary materials and a range of interviews with key actors in the emerging social entrepreneurship field in Vietnam, we examine institutional work to institutionalize social enterprise. We found that institutionalization of social enterprise in this context relied on particular types of institutional work (material work, cognitive work, and political work) and a number of organizational and institutional conditions. Our study contributes to the literature by examining practical activities underlying the process of institutionalization; shedding light on enabling conditions for institutional work; and exploring the relationship between institutional context and institutional work.
