Le bouddhisme vietnamien s’est implanté durablement en France à partir du milieu des années 70 avec l’arrivée massive des Vietnamiens fuyant le régime communiste. C’est un phénomène que l’on retrouve dans tous les grands pays d’accueil des réfugiés vietnamiens comme les Etats-Unis, le Canada, l’Australie, la Suisse. Ce bouddhisme de l’exil s’organise en réseaux associatifs déployés à l’échelle mondiale, de telle sorte que l’on peut parler d’une transnationalisation du bouddhisme vietnamien. En terre d’exil, les pagodes vietnamiennes doivent cependant s’appuyer sur d’autres ressources symboliques que le simple sentiment d’appartenance au bouddhisme, non exclusif chez les Vietnamiens. Via la pratique des hommages aux défunts, elles prennent en charge notamment les dimensions mémorielle, culturelle, religieuse et identitaire des exilés. Sous la forme d’une « ethno-religion », ce bouddhisme qui prend le relais d’anciennes structures sociales comme la famille ou les associations culturelles, parvient à fédérer une communauté vietnamienne transnationale tout en favorisant des réinterprétations de l’identité vietnamienne.
