Découvreur de talents, défenseur des « marginaux », juré Goncourt et conseiller auprès de son éditeur Fasquelle, il donne naissance à une figure non seulement intellectuelle, mais éditoriale, institutionnelle, nouvelle. Son innovation est gagnante, si bien qu’elle trouve bientôt des émules. L’exemple le plus éclatant est celui de Jean-Richard Bloch, écrivain et directeur d’une collection littéraire, dans les années 1920, chez l’éditeur Rieder
