Abstract
Plutarch’s statement, in the context of Pericles’ Pontic expedition ( Per. 20.1–2), that 600 Athenian volunteers were settled at Sinope has either been questioned or completely ignored in general treatments of Athenian cleruchies. These discussions typically depend entirely on written sources, to the exclusion of archaeological arguments. In fact, there are a number of ceramic stamps from Sinope which can contribute to a resolution of the question. The stamps discussed here provide indirect testimony to the fact of the Pontic expedition and to the influence of Athens on the governance and political history of Sinope. This influence is, most probably, a consequence of the presence of Athenians and their incorporation into the polis of Sinope.
