Cet ouvrage collectif, issu d'un colloque organisé en 2004 à Tübingen par le Sonderforschungsbereich « Expériences de la guerre.Guerre et société à l'époque moderne », se propose de jeter un nouveau regard sur les années autour de 1800, époque charnière que la recherche allemande a pris l'habitude d'appeler la Sattelzeit, en référence aux travaux de R. Koselleck.Comme le souligne U.P. dans son introduction, les historiens ont pourtant privilégié, pour aborder cette période, une perspective marquée par les théories de la modernisation -faisant donc porter l'accent sur les profonds changements politiques engendrés par la Révolution française et les guerres napoléoniennes, et ressentis également dans le Saint-Empire, dissous en 1806.Ils se sont en revanche plus rarement posé la question des expériences vécues par les hommes et femmes dans une société bouleversée dont il convient de souligner non seulement les ruptures, mais aussi les continuités avec les structures de l'Ancien Régime.Les seize contributions du livre s'efforcent ainsi de comprendre ce que signifiait, pour les contemporains, d'être plongé dans une situation historique secouée, d'une part, par des turbulences politiques d'une violence singulière mais ancrée, d'autre part, dans les sédiments d'une société traditionnelle.
