Abstract
Particularly in the implementation of manufacturing strategy, manufacturing engineering (ME) management is becoming central. Process positioning decisions are related to the deployment of internal ME resources during the equipment acquisition process. ME plays differing roles in this process, depending on whether the equipment represents a radical or incremental innovation. These roles require differing types and levels of interaction with both suppliers and with other groups within the firm, and argue for expansion of the manufacturing strategy model to include these decisions.
