Inter-Racial Marriage and Family Socio-economic Status: A Study among Whites, Filipinos, Japanese, and Hawaiians in Hawaii

Abstract
Intermarriage is often regarded as a positive sign of racial relations. This study uses census 2000 5% PUMS data from Hawaii to test the hypothesis that status exchange in intermarriage is related to lower family income and higher chances of living in poverty for low SES racial groups. Endogamous Whites and Japanese have highest income and lowest probability of living in poverty while the opposite is found for endogamous Hawaiians and Filipinos. Inter-married couples are usually between these two extremes in income and chances of being poor, except intermarried Whites and Japanese who are comparable to endogamous Whites and Japanese. It is argued that intermarriage actually helps to preserve social classes that separate the rich and the poor along racial lines.
