Par le traité de Madrid (1526), François Ier sortait de sa captivité madrilène à laquelle l’avait conduit la défaite de Pavie. Aussitôt, il dénonça les conditions injustes de ce traité. Son parjure suscita l’approbation ou l’indignation. Le présent article examine les résonances de cette polémique dans l’opinion publique, en présentant les justifications des partisans du roi et les accusations de ses contempteurs qui répliquèrent pour démystifier l’image de François Ier
