Les routes de l’Âge du Bronze dans les environs de Mycènes et celle reliant Tirynthe à Épidaure avaient clairement été planifiées en fonction de l’usage des chars qu’employaient surtout les superviseurs issus de la classe supérieure. Outre les besoins quotidiens de l’administration, ces chars et les routes elles-mêmes avaient pu être utilisés pour déployer l’infanterie afin de contrecarrer toute menace extérieure. Les témoignages archéologiques — forteresses et villes de Mycènes et de Tirynthe, inscriptions en Linéaire B qu’on y a retrouvées — indiquent que le territoire de Mycènes incluait probablement une grande partie du nord de l’Argolide et de la région de Corinthe. On ne pouvait contrôler ces régions sans routes ni chariots.
