Abstract
Ce recueil d'articles embrasse un champ plus vaste que ne le laisse deviner son titre ; il est vrai que le texte médiéval qui constitue son point de départ, le Karolus Magnus et Leo Papa (édité par Wilhelm Hentze en 1999), constitue un cas exemplaire.Celui-ci présente en effet la rencontre entre Léon III et Charlemagne en 799 ; mais, conçu probablement après le sacre de 800, il s'efforce de montrer que la rencontre de Paderborn devait déboucher naturellement sur la restauration de l'Empire l'année suivante.Ce lien fut-il purement inventé par l'auteur qui écrivait a posteriori, ou le sacre de 800 découlait-il réellement d'un projet préparé de longue date par les Carolingiens, voire par l'évolution de la société occidentale dans les décennies précédentes ?
