O sucesso comercial de Cesária Évora rivaliza-se com o de qualquer outro intérprete africano da música universal e tomou-se sinônimo de Cabo Verde para seus inúmeros fãs initernacionais. Cantando principalmente no dialeto do norte ou barlavento crioulo de sua Mindelo nativa (quando não utiliza o português ou o espanhol), Cesária contempla toda a gama da cultura musical cabo-verdiana, incluindo a da ilha do sul ou de sotavento de Santiago. Seu trabalho desenvolve-se no contexto do contraste de longa data entre Mindelo, porto internacional de abastecimento e provi­sões relativamente cosmopolita durante o século XIX, e a ilha de Santia­go, onde se localiza a capital, Praia, culturalmente muito mais "africana" e menos desenvolvida economicamente. Este estudo principia com os gê­neros de música e dança a que Cesária se refere na estrofe bem conheci­da da canção "Petic pays": "[...) Tem morna, tem coladera [...] Tem batuco, tem funanâ". Essa alusão às "raízes" da música de Cabo Verde não apenas desempenha um papel ideológico, colocando a cantora e sua música no amplo contexto do nacionalismo cultural de Cabo Verde, como também nos permite vislumbrar algumas dimensões da unidade cultural mais am­pla do mundo atlântico lusófono, assim como formas de empréstimo e troca praticadas no metagênero da música universal.
