Inspiré des méthodes iconographiques développées par l’anthropologue et historien de l’art Aby Warburg, cet essai visuel présente, à partir d’un travail d’échantillonnage d’images de villes inhabitées, un montage visant l’expression et la mise en évidence de leur pathos. C’est une connaissance par le montage qui est proposée ici, un travail d’assemblage de fragments visuels épars permettant d’ouvrir, par-delà les mots, des espaces de pensée où les formes de la sensibilité deviennent accessibles. Les images, choisies parmi la production photographique actuelle et juxtaposées dans le montage, évoquent une analogie génétique entre la ville abandonnée et le cadavre. Elles présentent, à travers cinq planches photographiques, une scénographie des différents degrés de dépérissement du bâti comme des « moments » du processus de décomposition post-mortem. À travers cette mise en récit, l’essai visuel propose d’envisager la ville fantôme photographiée comme une projection onirique de la veillée funéraire, un matériel phylogénétique (Freud), la survivance (Warburg) d’une expérience archaïque qui resurgit dans le présent et où les pierres du bâti reflètent les ombres de gestes et de rites du passé.
