Abstract
A critical debate in the literature recently has centered on women’s autonomy, and particularly its effects on the marital unit and the family functions. This study uses information gathered from 865 mothers with children under the age of twelve in Bolivian communities to examine the relationship between women’s status, autonomy and marital satisfaction. In particular, four linear regression models are tested to examine the individual and collective relationships between status, relational, and autonomy variables and marital satisfaction. The amount of respect a wife receives from her husband in the home and her ability to express her opinion in her marital union are significantly correlated with higher levels of marital satisfaction. These findings suggest that raising women’s autonomy in these aforementioned areas enhances their satisfaction with their marital unions and familial situations. Women’s status and autonomy, as indicated by the amount of respect they receive and their ability to express their opinion are important dynamics in marital relationships.
