Dans les villes en décroissance, les ruines constituent une réalité fondamentalement ambiguë, s’accompagnant de fléaux comme d’opportunités. À Détroit, shrinking city qui fut jadis capitale de l’industrie automobile, l’existence de dizaines de milliers de ruines pose des problèmes essentiels tout en faisant l’objet d’une fascination esthétique, suscitant d’âpres controverses. Cet article fait l’état des lieux des débats qui concernent les ruines de Détroit, afin de proposer des pistes pour construire une éthique politique de la ruine, permettant de mieux planifier et vivre avec les ruines dans les villes en décroissance. Il s’appuie sur une revue de la littérature sur les ruines et le déclin urbain, ainsi que sur une enquête de terrain réalisée à Détroit en 2012 et 2013.
