Cet article aborde les différents aspects qui, en arrière-fond, nous permettent de comprendre ce qui, dans les mutations entre religion et culture, influence la redéfinition des rapports entre religion et école et les enjeux que les communautés religieuses et culturelles investissent dans ce débat. Le Québec et la France, tout particulièrement, présentent deux scènes intéressantes à cet égard. Bien que ces deux sociétés abordent la problématique de la religion et de l’univers scolaire à partir d’un contexte structurel différent, la confessionnalité du système scolaire « public » dans l’une et la laïcité dans l’autre se voient interrogées à l’aune d’une même réalité, le pluralisme.
