Défrayant la chronique depuis son pugilat avec Ninjaman de 2003, le deejay jamaïcain Vybz Kartel, l’un des artistes les plus controversés et les plus populaires de l’espace public jamaïcain des dix dernières années, apparaît comme l’énième avatar du mythe du gangster noir. Toutefois, la consistance et la récurrence de ses prises de position publiques depuis 2009, qui devaient culminer avec la parution en 2012 de son autobiographie The Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto, interroge et complexifie cette image. En prenant appui sur le discours émique d’un des représentants majeurs de la scène dancehall contemporaine, cet article interroge la possibilité d’une articulation des valeurs conservatrices du dancehall jamaïcain avec une forme de conscience de classe s’exprimant dans la rhétorique de la défense du ghetto. L’examen critique de ses arguments est l’occasion de poser la question de la persistance ou non de la figure de l’intellectuel organique dans les cultures diasporiques noires contemporaines, tout en la replaçant dans le temps long de l’histoire coloniale.
