Se diseñó un estudio caso control de carácter retrospectivo que incluyó todos los fallecidos menores de 7 días Mortalidad Neonatal Precoz como caso estudio que ocurrieron en el Servicio de Neonatología del Hospital Gineco Obstétrico Docente Provincial de Sancti Spíritus desde el 1ro de enero de 2000 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2004, ambos inclusive, con el objetivo de analizar el comportamiento de este indicador. Se tomaron 2 casos de recién nacidos ingresados al servicio antes y / o después de cada fallecido, que tuvieron patologías asociadas, como caso control. Como método estadístico se utilizó el porcentual y como medida de asociación el Riesgo Relativo con un intervalo de confianza del 95% y se aplicó el coeficiente de KAPPA con un nivel de significación de a= o,o5 mediante el programa EPITABLE del paquete de programas Epilfo, identificándose como variables significativas la sepsis ovular presuntiva dentro de los antecedentes maternos y el parto distócico. La Morbilidad mas frecuentes de los fallecidos fue la Hipoxia aguda Enfermedad de la Membrana Hialina, Cardiopatía congénita y Hemorragia pulmonar. Existió buena correlación clínico patológica de los casos fallecidos mediante la clasificación ABERDEEN modificada y la de QUEBEC. En este estudio la menor tasa de Mortalidad Neonatal Precoz en el quinquenio analizado fue el año 1999. Los datos se procesaron en una computadora y los resultados llevados a tablas y gráficos, todos expresados en tasa por cada mil nacidos vivos.
