Cette recherche en aménagement vise à comprendre le rôle du vélo dans le rapport enfant-environnement à travers la participation des enfants dans le projet participatif d’aménagement pour leur quartier. Elle a été réalisée en considérant le projet participatif d’aménagement comme situation de recherche dans laquelle l’enfant, en tant qu’acteur, peut rendre explicite et transformer la manière dont il comprend son environnement. La recherche a été réalisée à travers deux projets participatifs d’aménagement inscrits dans le programme international de recherche-action Grandir en ville de l’UNESCO, menés en 2005 à Montréal (Canada) et à Guadalajara (Mexique). Des jeunes âgés entre 8 et 16 ans (20 à Montréal et 27 à Guadalaj ara), ont collaboré avec des étudiants en aménagement d’une université locale (16 à Montréal, 19 à Guadalajara) à la cueillette de données et la conception de projets d’aménagement pour leur quartier. L’analyse qualitative de l’information produite à travers ces expériences comprend trois niveaux de réflexion complémentaires. Le premier concerne le sous-projet, soit le rapport enfant C environnement. Il permet de conceptualiser le vélo comme manifestation du rapport projectif entre l’enfant et son environnement au sein d’un modèle qui intègre quatre catégories spatio- perceptives, soit 1) la maison-refuge, 2) le quartier-menaçant, 3) la maison- précaire et 4) le quartier intéressant. Le deuxième niveau concerne le projet, soit la relation entre le concepteur et l’objet conçu. Il permet de considérer le projet participatif comme un processus d’apprentissage et la participation des enfants comme une manière de comprendre leur environnement vécu. Finalement, le troisième niveau concerne le méta-projet, soit la réflexion des acteurs par rapport à leur propre démarche au sein du projet. Il permet de comprendre le projet participatif d’aménagement comme un éveil éthique dans la perspective des aménagistes, caractérisé entre autres par l’adoption d’une approche environnementale et anthropologique non déterministe.
