Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

-- ABSTRACT:
\nThe Saguenay Fjord, located in the subarctic region of eastern Canada, is different from most fjords because it is connected to an energetic tidal estuary rather than directly with the ocean. At its mouth, a shallow 20 m deep sill limits water exchanges with the deep (300 m) Lower St. Lawrence Estuary. However, the large tides at the fjord mouth have the potential to bring dense waters from the estuary into the fjord and renew the basins waters. To provide a clearer quantitative understanding of the inner basin renewal dynamics and seasonality, two moorings were deployed in the fjord. The moorings provided information on currents over almost the entire water column and over several months, as well as temperature-salinity at a few discrete depths. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the results and to time contraints, one of the two moorings could not be analyzed in detail. Hydrographic temperature and salinity transects spanning multiple seasons and years were also collected and provide a better understanding of the distribution of water masses in the fjord. The observations show that the fjord dynamics are more complex than previously hypothesized, with an abrupt seasonal shift in the large-scale circulation pattern observed in mid-February.
\nMoreover, unanticipated subsurface renewals spreading just underneath the halocline (~ 10 m depth) occurred frequently between late-winter and mid-summer. Depending on the season, three types of renewal can be observed : deep renewals occurring in fall and early winter followed by sub-surface renewals and finally intermediate renewals in summer. The seasonal variability of the depth of renewal events and the circulation regime shift in winter may be explained by the salinity seasonal variability of the waters present at the sill, itself likely controlled by the seasonality of the St. Lawrence estuarine circulation. We estimate the renewal time of the inner basin to be typically 2 months but up to a maximum of 6 months.
