L’autonomie des universités est devenue un enjeu tant au Québec qu’en France ou cours de ces dernières années. Mais que recouvre cette notion ? Cet article examine de manière comparée quatre dimensions de l’autonomie des universités vis à vis de l’Etat. Les résultats soulignent les écarts dans les conceptions de l’autonomie des universités dans les deux sociétés, liés à deux modèles opposés : fédéral au Québec, de décentralisation en France. Cependant la dynamique actuelle des configurations universitaires québécoises et françaises permet de dégager quelques convergences sur l’action directive de l’Etat dans la gouvernance du système universitaire.
