Steel and Steel Making Raw Materials: Outlook to 2010 Driven by China, India and Brazil

Abstract
Over the outlook period to 2010, growth in global steel production will be underpinned by strong growth in steel demand in China, India and Brazil. Further, as blast furnaces are expected to account for most of the growth in steel production, the outlook for iron ore and metallurgical coal remains positive. Asian countries (excluding Japan) are expected to account for the majority of the increases in iron ore and metallurgical coal consumption and imports over the outlook period. Developments in China will have a significant impact on global markets for steel making raw material. Despite having significant reserves of both iron ore and metallurgical coal, the strength of demand growth from China's rapidly expanding steel sector has supported significant imports of steel making raw materials. Australia's relative proximity to Asian markets compared with Brazil, Canada and the United States and higher expected growth in export capacity compared with Russia and South Africa are expected to allow Australia to capture an increasing share of world seaborne trade in iron ore and metallurgical coal.
