Au moment où nous commémorons la première guerre mondiale il est intéressant de revenir sur ce conflit « hors norme » qui reste encore d’actualité un siècle après son déroulement. Cet intérêt pour la Grande Guerre s’explique par la nécessité d’en comprendre les tenants et aboutissants pour mieux connaître notre époque et les conflits contemporains. La première guerre mondiale marque le début d’une ère nouvelle de la conflictualité. Peut-elle être considérée comme une matrice des conflits du xx e et xxi e siècles ? Pour répondre à cette question nous chercherons à établir les ressemblances et dissemblances qui existent entre la Grande Guerre et les conflits contemporains en croisant la nature de la guerre et celle du système international.
