La présente thèse a pour objectif principal d’apporter une contribution à l’avancement des connaissances théoriques et à l’amélioration des pratiques en management de projet et plus spécifiquement en management des mégaprojets d’investissement. Elle pose notamment un regard critique sur les pratiques actuelles en management de projet qui, en dépit de leur apport significatif, présentent des limites qui affectent la performance des projets. C’est ainsi que nous avons choisi de porter notre analyse sur les approches Project Management Institue (PMI), International Project Management Association (IPMA) et du PRojects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2). Cette recherche vise la proposition d’une approche innovatrice et originale de management de projet qui prend en compte tous les facteurs susceptibles de favoriser la performance des mégaprojets d’investissement. Pour y parvenir, l’approche constructiviste a été retenue parce qu’elle favorise le développement de nouvelles connaissances sous une forme applicable (Kasanen, Lukka & Siitonen, 1993). La méthode mixte qualitative/quantitative et l’étude de cas (la recherche a été menée au Burkina Faso en Afrique de l’Ouest et au Canada) sont le socle du protocole méthodologique. Des entretiens semi-directifs, et l’analyse documentaire ont, principalement, permis de collecter les informations utiles. Ces instruments ont permis de faire une collecte multi-sources de données dont l’analyse croisée a généré des résultats fiables dont les principaux sont : les limites objectives des approches classiques en management de projet ont été relevées. Elles sont pour l’essentiel la négligence ou l’occultation des facteurs humains et comportementaux dans le processus de management interne des projets. Par conséquent, dix-sept (17) facteurs négligés ont été identifiés autour des trois dimensions (managériale, technique et méthodologique) qui affectent la performance des mégaprojets d’investissement. Aussi, ces instruments ont facilité la mesure du degré d’influence de chacun des facteurs identifiés. Enfin, les résultats atteints ont permis le développement d’une approche intégrée de management de mégaprojet favorable à la performance. Une approche plus holistique, dynamique et flexible qui compléterait l’approche classique jugée « mécanique » ou « cybernétique ». Conformément à l’esprit du programme de doctorat en management de projet, cette recherche a permis d’aboutir à des résultats qui renforcent les connaissances théoriques d’une part, mais aussi et surtout contribuent à la résolution de problèmes en milieu réel de management de projet d’autre part. En somme, cette thèse est articulée autour de six (6) chapitres qui traitent respectivement de la problématique de la performance des mégaprojets, de l’analyse critique des approches classiques en management de projet, du cadre théorique et conceptuel, de la méthodologie, de la présentation et de l’interprétation des résultats de la recherche et, enfin, de la discussion des résultats.

\nThis dissertation purports to increase the body of theoretical knowledge and to improve best practices in project management and, to be more specific, in the management of mega-investment projects. Specifically, it takes a critical look at current project management practices which, in spite of their capital contribution, show limits that act negatively on the performance of the projects. Thus, we have elected to focus our analysis on Project Management Institue (PMI), International Project Management Association (IPMA) and PRojects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2) approaches. This research aims to formulate an innovative and original approach to project management that takes into account all factors likely to foster the achievement of mega-investment projects. To do so, we have adopted the constructivist approach that is about the development of new applied knowledge (Kasanen, Lukka & Siitonen, 1993). Mix methods and case study (the research has been conducted in Burkina Faso, West Africa and in Québec, Canada) inform the methodology of the present research. We have mainly resorted to semi-direct interviews and document analysis to collect the data. These instruments have led to a rigorous collection of quality data from several sources. These data underwent a cross- analysis that yielded reliable results. Here are the highlights that hinge on the objective limits of the classical approaches in project management: They include primarily the negligence or the glossing over of human and behavioral, or soft skills in the process of internal management of megainvestment projects. As a consequence, seventeen (17) neglected factors have been identified around the three dimensions (managerial, technical, and methodological) that affect the performance of mega- investment projects. Also, these instruments have made the measure of the degree of significance of each of these factors identified easier. Finally, the results achieved have enabled the formulation of an integrated approach to mega-investment project management that enhances performance, a more holistic, dynamic and flexible classical approach deemed « mechanical » or « cybernetic». In keeping with the spirit of the doctoral program in project management, this research has come up with findings that strengthen the body of theoretical knowledge on one hand, but also, and more importantly, contribute to problem solving in real-life project management contexts, on the other hand. To summarize, this dissertation is organized around six (6) chapters that respectively address the problem of performance with regard to mega-investment projects; the critical analysis of the classical approaches in project management; the theoretical and conceptual framework; the methodology; the presentation and the interpretation of the research findings; and finally, the interpretation of the findings.
