Los temas del mestizaje y de los mestizos no son nada nuevos en la historiografía sobre América Latina: han sido objetos de estudios demográficos, culturales y de corte antropológico, político en momentos precisos -tal como la sublevación de la plebe urbana de México en 1692- y conceptual cuando el mestizaje apareció como elemento cristalizador de un proyecto nacional. A pesar de los intensos debates que alimentaron una gran producción de obras, hacía falta un estudio que tuviera como objetivo -sin duda muy ambicioso- de reconstruir “el mundo mestizo”, en su sentido amplio, es decir, que no se limitara a los mestizos stricto sensu, sino que abarcara el conjunto de las castas.
