Abstract
L’enfant est-il un être rationnel? Les comparaisons qu’Aristote établit entre le petit enfant d’une part, et les bêtes sauvages et les esclaves d’autre part, donnent à penser que ce n’est pas le cas. Toutefois, un examen attentif du contexte doctrinal dans lequel prennent place ces comparaisons indique qu’il ne s’agit pas là de jugements dont la portée s’inscrit sur le plan axiologique. En outre, une étude des facultés de l’âme visées par l’éthique montre que le rôle de l’éducateur, lequel doit inculquer à l’enfant les habitudes qui le mèneront, adulte, à l’exercice de la vertu au sens fort, ne consiste pas à s’adresser à l’enfant comme être rationnel, mais bien comme être raisonnable, ce qui relève d’une tout autre faculté de l’âme. Cette conception de la vertu et des moyens qui doivent être mis en œuvre pour acquérir cet état stable explique l’importance qu’accorde Aristote à l’obéissance dans l’éducation des enfants.
