Finite-element analysis of anchor-jointed precast structural wall system

Abstract
The anchor-jointed precast structural shear wall system is a novel structure. In this system, precast shear walls are jointed together and/or to the foundation using threaded steel anchor bolts. This new joining technique makes the construction process of precast shear walls easier and faster. Moreover, steel anchor bolts at the connection are designed to act as structural ductile fuses in order to reduce the possibility of concrete damage and capital loss during an earthquake event. The primary objective of this study was to develop a three-dimensional finite-element model to capture the lateral response of the proposed system. The accuracy of the developed model was verified at element and structural levels using, respectively, experimental data from the literature and test results on reduced-scale anchor-jointed shear walls. The verified model was then used to conduct an analytical parametric study. The results indicate that the lateral response of the proposed system is controlled by the parameters governing concrete fracture energy in both tension and compression. In addition, gravity loads were found to greatly enhance the lateral capacity of the system, while anchor pre-tensioning forces had a minimal effect on the system behaviour.
