Abstract
The years of the reign of Alexander I were saturated with events that with a view to the foreign policy turned the Russian Empire into a major player on the international stage, while in domestic terms, it faced one of the biggest challenges to preserving the integrity of the Russian territories – the Caucasian war. It was the result of the unwillingness of the North Caucasus nations to accept Russian rule after the annexation of their lands to the Empire. This forced Russia to be flexible in the colonization of the region by combining the methods of war with the attempts to establish a permanent peaceful coexistence between Russians and Caucasians. Among the latter was the idea of returning some of the nations living in the North Caucasus to the Christian faith and preaching Christianity as a means of pacifying the martial spirit of the local population. It is precisely here that the need to send missionaries to preach the Word of God and to convert the population on the spot occurred.
