Abstract
Cet article envisage le travail policier sous l’angle de sa mise en images dans la rue et de la diffusion de ces documents (audio)visuels sur les plateformes de partage de l’Internet. Grâce à une enquête ethnographique dans une grande police urbaine nord-américaine, nous montrons comment la « sousveillance » de la police par ses publics marque fortement les perceptions professionnelles des agents en uniforme et modifie leur appréhension des situations d’intervention. Soumis aux regards des foules équipées de caméras miniatures, mais aussi producteurs eux-mêmes d’images grâce à des dispositifs embarqués (dans les véhicules ou accrochés à leur uniforme), les agents seraient alors mieux aptes à rendre des comptes et communiquer sur leurs actions. Entre information du public, mise en débat des actions policières et autopromotion de la police, l’article interroge ce rôle des images et souligne l’importante transformation de la visibilité policière qui s’y joue.
