Partant de l’idée de plus en plus admise que les technologies nouvelles peuvent se combiner avec différents modes d’organisation du travail, l’auteur présente les résultats d’une recherche sur les transformations du design du travail et des qualifications dans une usine de fabrication de moteurs en Espagne. Il analyse la place prise par la fonction « entretien » et les répercussions de ce changement, qui a mené à la réorganisation de l’entreprise autour des « groupes de projet » et des « cercles de qualité ». Il fait ressortir les contradictions que vit l’entreprise, entre une gestion de la main-d’oeuvre de type traditionnel (centralisée et rigide) et la nécessité de plus en plus forte de décentraliser cette gestion et d’utiliser les compétences des ouvriers avec flexibilité.
