Strauss mobilise deux conceptions distinctes de la modernité. La première y voit le résultat d’un éloignement du droit naturel classique. Propre à l’Occident, cet éloignement trouverait sa forme achevée dans l’historicisme de Nietzsche et de Heidegger. La seconde, explicitée par A. Bloom ou P. Manent, associe la modernité à l’avènement de la démocratie, c’est-à-dire à ce que les Grecs voyaient comme une possibilité politique naturelle. Aboutissement d’une histoire singulière ou fait naturel, la modernité apparaît toutefois comme une forme d’illimitation du désir, sous la figure des philosophies de la volonté ou sous la figure de la libération démocratique du sensible.
