La question agite nombre de pays. Depuis peu, des enquetes permettent de savoir dans quelle mesure les comportements des immigres et ceux du reste de la population se rapprochent au fil des generations, que ce soit dans la pratique des langues, les efforts educatifs, les relations hommes femmes, le choix du conjoint. Le probleme est qu’il est difficile de cerner l’« identite » de reference qui servirait de base a cette comparaison, tant la societe francaise est elle-meme divisee et tant elle a absorbe de migrants dans le passe. Cela n’empeche pas de s’interroger, comme l’ont fait les Quebecois, sur les valeurs communes non negociables qui peuvent definir l’identite nationale quelles que soient les origines de chacun.
